This is a small to medium tree when adult. This tree is like a palm tree when you look at it. The tree is usually straight and sometimes divides towards the top and has two or more heads on the tree. It has bark that is rough and brown, it also appears to have circles going up the tree. The leaves are all towards the top of the tree and the leaves also appear to surround the head of the tree. The leaves has a large center midrib that attaches to the trunk and extend outwards a couple of feet, it also has leaflets that are paired opposite from one another, it is paired opposite to the tip. The male has a cone that is located at the top center of the tree. The females have a cone that when opens has what appears to be yellowish leaflets. When these leaflets are pollinated fruit starts to grow on them. Before, the fruit were collected, cut in half or fours and washed/soaked for up to a week. After the fruit is washed thoroughly it is dried and processed into flour. The flour is then used to make "Titiyas Fadang", a Chamoru flat bread made from the fruit of this tree. It is very important to pay attention to the processing of the "fadang" flour because the fruit has a type of poison in it. The poison can be washed out, if done carefully. It would be best to seek the help from an individual who knows the processing of "fadang" fruit because the poison in the fruit can kill you.
